SBO Sligo Baroque Orchestra
One of the great pleasure of playing violin is playing with others, so I (Mairead) travel to Sligo weekly to play with SBO. Sligo Baroque Orchestra (SBO) is a small group of players, exploring Baroque, Classical and sometimes 20th century pieces. SBO plays at the Model-Niland Gallery on Sligo Mall on the First Sunday of every month, for a 1pm lunchtime concert. SBO frequently collaborates with other musicians- classical, traditional ‘trad’, Jazz, Ethnic, so concerts are varied and interesting.

concert included Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto, performed by Cathal Roche with SBO. I was away for the weekend, so i did not play with SBO for this, after attending rehearsals. The work is quite virtuosic, even for the ‘background’ musicians, and the Fast movements were really whipping along. I could not play all the passages, and had to sit quiet and let my colleagues carry the most difficult sections. However, it is all a learning curve.

Dublin. Their concert program included a number of songs as their group includes singers.
Saturday: 14/dec/2024
Christmas Concert was on Saturday 14/Dec/2024, and SBO was joined by singers Katelyn Ressner (Soprano), Aoife Anderson, Hanna Scheiffelen, Jonathan Carter, Brian Woods. Singers and orchestra delivered many instrumental and vocal pieces from the Messiah Part 1. The concert was held at Calry Parish Church (Anglican), on the Mall, Sligo, which was a lovely intimate venue which really complimented and enhanced the music. The music and singing were glorious, and the audience seemed to enjoy it very much. I definitely enjoyed being part of the orchestra for the concert, and my mother, brother and sister attended, to support me, and to support Focus Ireland (all proceeds collected on the door went to this charity).

29/sept/2024 The Enchanted Forest (Geminiani 1574)
As part of the Sligo Baroque Festival, SBO played ‘The Enchanted Forest’ by Geminiani (composed in 1754). The music is made up of two parts, and each part has many sections, with changes of tempo, key and mood to paint a dramatic picture of events, which keeps it very entertaining. The original story was about a Crusader, sorcery and the hero Rinaldo. SBO have chosen to accompany the music with a video of forest scenes with commentary on woodlands and forestry in Ireland over the centuries.
